The 2009 German Federal Horticultural Exhibition will not be restricted to Schwerin. Instead a whole series of projects in the surrounding area will be incorporated into the exhibition. These are located all over Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but most lie in the region of Mecklenburg-Schwerin – that is in the districts of North-West Mecklenburg, Parchim and Ludwigslust. As a result, visitors to the Schwerin exhibition will be able to drive to these satellite venues in about an hour to an hour and a half.
At 34 locations visitors will be offered experiences that are closely linked to the National Garden Festival in Schwerin, picking up on and developing some of its themes. So, for example, at the Gross Raden Open-Air Museum (picture) visitors will be able to learn how the Slavs lived here 1,000 years ago, and at Schloss Rattey they can hear about the successes in the restoration of devastated landscapes and visit the most northerly vineyards in Germany. There are magnificent parks and gardens to visit at (among other places) Schloss Bothmer in Klütz and Güstrow Castle. At the satellite venues, organic farming is equally as important as nature walks. And all these venues will also offer artistic and cultural events “along the way”.
